The Victorian Bone China Cream & Consommé Soup Bowls
Antique Bone China Consommé & Cream Soup Bowls
Victorian soup bowls were specialized and prized tabletop pieces designed during the 19th century to match specific soup consistencies, serving temperatures, and strict formal dining etiquette. It was a status enhancer for the woman of the house to count the cream soup as part of her bone china collection. Either soup or fish was served as the very first course of an elaborate multi-course Victorian meal. The Victorian formal dinner menu had its own set of non-negotiated dining rules. Victorian cream soup bowls and consommé (bouillon) bowls differ primarily in their size, handle orientation, and the specific type of soup they were designed to serve, and for adherence of the strict rules in consuming different soups.

DESIGNING
an elegant tabletop in our antique and vintage, curated tabletop collections is an exercise in visual storytelling, where layers of history, texture and color converge to create an unforgettable dining experience. The foundation begins with the timeless, iconic, translucent ivory Lenox bone china. The options are exciting! The sophistication of antique Limoges and Haviland bone china’s delicate, refined porcelain artistry in foundational elegance can be dynamically elevated by the playful brilliance of colorful depression glass or the multi-faceted shimmer of antique crystal stems, casting a warm, atmospheric glow across the setting. Silver plate flatware from the Victorian, Art Deco, Art Nouveau or mid-century Camelot tabletop eras offer a rhythmic, polished framework, guiding the eye toward the theatrical centerpiece of the meticulously planned menu. Here, visually-commanding samovars, hand-chased coffee pots and full coffee and tea services, polished silver plate serving trays, and gleaming chafing dishes and buffet servers establish a dramatic sense of scale and hospitality. By artfully balancing the intricate patterns of the porcelain with the bold sculptural presence of the silver serving pieces, your tabletop transcends from a simple meal structure into a breathtaking canvas of luxury.
